The function of the piston ring is to seal the gap between the piston and the cylinder wall. The piston ring has a gas ring and an oil ring. The function of the Air ring is to ensure the sealing of the gas in the cylinder, and to transmit the heat from the upper part of the piston to the cylinder wall, which is emitted to the atmosphere by cooling water or air. The oil ring is used to scrape off the excess lubricating oil on the cylinder wall, prevent the oil from burning and losing, make the oil evenly distributed on the cylinder wall, and improve the lubrication conditions of the piston, piston ring and cylinder wall. Because the piston ring works under the conditions of high temperature, high pressure, high speed and extremely difficult lubrication, the piston ring material is made of wear-resistant and heat-resistant high-quality gray cast iron, and the working surface of the piston ring is porous chrome plated. Porous chrome plating has high hardness and can store a small amount of engine oil to improve lubrication conditions and prolong the service life of the ring by 2-3 times. There are two forms of piston ring wear: abrasive wear and napping wear. Abrasive wear: mainly caused by dust and mechanical impurities entering the cylinder. These sharp impurities attach to the cylinder wall, causing abrasive wear of piston rings and Pistons, and are transmitted everywhere through lubricating oil. The first air ring has a large ring pressure and wears the fastest. Napping wear: napping is a melting process, that is, due to the high temperature, small gap and serious friction between the higher part of the friction surface, the small pieces of the piston ring are temporarily melted, and welding and napping occur. The Napping of the piston ring usually occurs at the position where the first air ring reaches the top dead center of the cylinder. Because the temperature here is the highest, the lubrication is the worst, and the ring has a short stay relative to the cylinder wall, the napping is most likely to occur. Once the napping starts, it expands rapidly. When the napping continues to expand, the sealing effect of the Air ring and the oil ring is destroyed, air leakage occurs and the consumption of lubricating oil increases.
